You know how there are those cafes and diners you always liked to stop at on your way to your typical family vacation spot? For some people, it might be the Frosty Freeze or the freeway-side diner in the little off-the-path town. Others might have a favorite gourmet restaurant that they associate that family trip with. Here are some favorite California staples.
Black Bear Diner – this little coffee shop has the absolute best, buttery and sweet pancakes. The diner is located in many central coast towns such as Petaluma and Sonoma and even further south in Gilroy . Any road trip that requires a nutritious and wholesome breakfast can count on the usual staples of bacon and eggs, waffles, fruit, cereal and those famous pancakes. If you stop in the evening, they serve individual-sized pies – peach cobbler, apple, chocolate and berry among others. You will stand at the counter and be confounded on which one to choose, and then maybe even take another one for a friend later on.
Fosters Freeze – of this oldie but goodie! How many stops did you make at the local Fosters when you were a kid? On a hot summer day, after camping nothing could beat a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone or hot fudge sundae. It was and is mostly fun just to stop and get a vanilla or chocolate cone. The majority of Fosters have long since closed yet still several remain in little hamlets sprinkled throughout Northern California. You can still find a Fosters in Petaluma , Clear Lake , Gilroy and just outside of Santa Rosa.
Shakey’s Pizza – originally started in Sacramento , Shakey’s has closed up in Northern California, but you can still find one in Bakersfield. If you’re driving to LA, it makes a great, little stop, especially when there is not much to get excited about in this part of California. Once you hit Los Angeles , you can find a Shakey’s about three miles away from Disneyland. Take a break from the park and go enjoy that world-famous thin crust that tastes yeasty good.
