Now is a very good time of year to plan a day trip to San Francisco and take a cruise in and around Alcatraz. While you can go to Pier 39 and find a cruise leaving that day, better to plan your afternoon around it so you don’t miss the departure times. Right now, you will find windy, sunny and cool-to-cold temperatures so wear a windbreaker. It’s always fun to visit Alcatraz and tour the old rundown prison facility famous for housing Prohibition criminals like Al Capone and infamous for only having two prisoners ever escape, creating the mystery surrounding their survival and the myth that produced the Clint Eastwood “Escape from Alcatraz.” The tour is fun for small children and intriguing for adults interested in history. It doesn’t take more than a couple of hours to see everything and be back on the pier. Other tours can be found to Angel Island, Sausalito, Marin and the San Francisco Headlands. Before or after your tour, you can try eating lunch at Boudin’s Bread Co., world famous for its sourdough loaves and catch a healthy lunch of clam chowder in a bread bowl, a classic family treat. They have fresh, tasty clam chowder, and be warned, just because your near fresh seafood doesn’t mean all of the restaurants serve “fresh” seafood. So stick to tried-and-true places like Boudin.
