Want to take an incredible and scenic hike to lakes above Lake Tahoe where the road is somewhat less traveled? Then try an Emerald Bay Day Hike. You have two spectacular hikes to chose from that start on the upper shoreline overlooking Emerald Bay on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. Drive up highway 89 toward the bay that roughly 7.5 miles from the South Shore. The trailhead for both hikes begins at what is called the “Y” above Emerald Bay. In the summer months, it’s easy to spot, because it gets crowded and dozens of cars will be parked along the roadside. The first hike takes you to Granite Lake and Maggies Peak and requires about a half-day or hiking to reach the final destination which is about 10 miles round trip if you hit each milestone. This one does take you at the utmost peak approximately 8,900 feet above sea level and offers incredible views of the Sierra and Tahoe. The second choice, a full-day hike, takes you to Eagle, Velma and Fontanillis Lakes and is much more rigorous at about 20 miles roundtrip if you venture to all destinations. You will be at about 8,200 feet above sea level if you choose to trek up to Fontanillis Lake. Since both hikes are high altitude, be prepared to make many rest stops to catch your breath, bring lunch or snacks, and plenty of water to refresh. This hike is not recommended for smaller children, and you would be well advised to leave those under age 10 at base camp lest you want to spend the whole trip carrying someone on your shoulders.
